What are the arguments for and against the charges of globalization as a form of neocolonialism?

by DPanther_

I have been reading about globalization and its effects on the world. I have seen people argue that it is simply "another form of colonialism" but also have seen people say that it is raising the prosperity of countries by introducing them to the world market. Would someone be kind enough to provide more in-depth information and show the arguments for and against globalization as a form of neocolonialism?

I believe it cannot truly be regarded as a form of colonialism. Globalization describes the growing interconnectedness of world markets and cultures through the advancement of technology and communication pathways. Neocolonialism describes the modern modes of economic exploitation used on smaller nations by more powerful ones. Since globalization is a process that cannot be controlled totally, I would argue it is not the same thing. Globalization, in itself, is not a process of guided, intentional exploitation. Has neocolonialism been a part of globalization? Absolutely. Are there unfair international organizations and institutions? Yes. As the world has come together, winners have attempted to secure their advantage in different agreements, creating instances of exploitation. Those instances would seem to be a manifestation of neocolonialism that occurred in the wake of globalization. There may be more exact scholarly arguments concerning the roles of neocolonialism in globalization, but this is the best answer I can give based on my understanding of the concepts.
