What sort of ancestry did most soldiers who fought in the American Revolutionary war have?

By ancestry, I'm referring to country of origin. I'm curious as to whether or not its possible my distant relatives were in the conflict, because I know very little about them.

Do you mean on the Patriot or Tory side? It varies. Mostly notably, a lot of patriots were Scots-Irish, even the point of it being called a "Presbyterian rebellion." However, this isn't to overshadow the English, Scots, and Germans that fought too -even on the British side.

Also, if you can trace your lineage that far back, there's a decent chance.
