I am part Blackfoot and don't know much in the history of them, I know they were the French living in North Africa but that's about it. Two paragraphs to explain it would be fine, I don't need too much detail or links to pages.
The "pieds noirs" ("blackfeet") were French (and other European) settlers living in Algeria (mostly) or Morocco or Tunisia before these countries became independent from France.
More specifically, the term is usually applied to those settlers who returned to France during or after independence (1956-1962 in the case of Algeria). The European settlers had begun arriving in North Africa soon after the French took Algeria in 1830. Generations had lived in North Africa. Not wanting to become a minority in a Muslim country, many fought against North African independence, and, when it looked inevitable, left to re-settle in France.
"Blackfoot", on the other hand ("Niitsitapi"as they call the Confedracy - meaning "original people"), usually refers to a coalition of Native American tribes in Canada and Montana, all of whom speak a common language ("Blackfoot").
The Blackfeet or 'Pieds Noir' were the collective name given to the European population living in French Algeria. The name itself comes from one of two possible origins; either it is related to the black shoes often associated with the French Military or its related to the somewhat patronising view of the Metropolitan French that the Pied Noirs had their feet burned black by the hot African Sun.
Despite their association with France by the early 20th century only around 1/5th of Pieds Noir had their origin in France the rest coming from other Southern European countries like Spain and Italy.
In the period prior to the Algerian War they were fiercely opposed to any kind of reform that would give the Algerian Muslims any kind of legal equality, this was due to their fear that they would be swamped by the 8 million Muslims living in Algeria at this time. This opposition to compromise continued during the War itself and was able to spread to a large number of French army units serving in Algeria.
After the end of the War the vast majority of Pieds Noirs fled Algeria, they feared reprisals by the now victorious FLN.
I hope this cleared this up. If you or anyone else has any question I'm more than willing to try to answer them.
