I have heard that the X-Men series holds many parallels to MLK and Malcom X fighting for black rights. What are some of them?

This question is perhaps more fitting for people who knowledgeable on the comic book rather than historians. Have you tried over at /r/Marvel?

"Many" parallels is a bit of an exaggeration, and I haven't heard any of the authors of the series say that it's conscious homage.

But one thing that shows up in a lot of successful liberation and/or civil rights struggles is that you have both a "good cop" and a "bad cop" on the oppressed side: a large, violent terrorist organization willing to do anything possible to make oppression expensive and dangerous to the oppressors, and an equally large non-violent resistance group. Having a Ghandi, or a MLK, or a Mandela, gives the oppressors someone palatable to surrender to if and when they realize that they can't win.

I'm not a credentialed expert in liberation history, but I can't think off hand of an example of such a struggle, lead from below, that didn't have both factions, both kinds of leaders.
