Did this happen or was it just a myth?
Well if you look at the etymology of the word "faggot", it was more used for burning heretics. It didn't become a connotation for homosexuality until it was slang in the mid 20th centuries of in the United States. However, this etymology is probably not correct, because "faggot" is a slang term for a homosexual in English, and in Medieval England homosexuals were never burned at the stake but rather hanged. During the medieval times, homosexuality was just seen as any other sin. As time went by with correlation to religious fervor, punishments became severe with castration on the first offense, dismemberment on the second, and burning on the third. We can see more evidence of mass burnings of homosexuals by Crusaders. The Knights of templar were accused of heresy and intolerable acts. On March 18, 1314, Jacques de Molay and D'Auvergne were burned at the stake, and the extinction of the Knights of Templar began.
