I've heard that the tradition originated in Umayyad Spain. Is this true?
The wedding ring dates back to the times of the Ancient Romans and Greeks. But, it were the Egyptians who established the custom of placing a ring on the finger of a wife. The Greek and Roman grooms often gave a ring to the bride's father. In the second century B.C., the Roman bride was presented with a gold ring that she wore only in public in order to indicate her status of marriage. The ring was also often very fragile and lavish, and thus the Roman husband gave a 2nd ring for household wear which was usually made of iron and had little knobs in the form of a key.The significance of this second household ring was that the wearer had the right to seal up the other's possessions
