What happened in Europe that marked a major political and social break with the past?

Well, I'm afraid you're going to have to be more clear on this--nearly every European historian might make a claim for something happening in their own field that represented a break with the past.. e.g. Industrial Revolution, invention of the Printing Press, creation of gender roles, Consolidation of the State, The Magna Carta, the French Revolution, The Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, Socialism, imperialism, the Enlightenment, the Renaissance geography..just...a lot.

I'm sorry, but this is an incredibly broad question. We prefer to see questions have some sort of focus. Is there something more specific you are looking to find an answer to?
