Gamer culture is pretty full on, people devote their lives to what some call a frivolous pass-time. Was there anything like that in Medieval/ancient times?

Just one was the comic book panic in the 1950s. Sparked by Fredric Wertham book The Seduction of the Innocent this lead to congressional hearings. Super hero comics were crippled by a comic code that limited what could be printed. Horror comics were absolutely destroyed.
