Why did the U.S. create the Grease Gun during WW2 when they had the Thompson sub machine gun?

Compared with the Thompson submachine gun, the M3 was cheaper to produce, lighter, more accurate, and shorter (so easier to use in close quarters)

It was intended as the replacement for the Thompson.

It also fires a little slower, so it takes longer for a soldier to blow through all their ammo while still providing a sufficient volume of fire for supression.
