Are there any good online resources a lay person can use to study history?

Yes! People usually find Khan Academy pretty accessible. For more in-depth history, try Yale's Open Course page. I believe MIT and some other large universities offer similar free lectures.

For my classes, I often mine the primary sources hosted by Fordham University. Really great stuff, if you use them in concert with secondary material!
