What's the deal with Israel?

by DannyFilming

I'm sort of out of the loop when it comes to this. As far as i know the jews were given Israel by someone (who?) after ww2 out if pity because of all that had happened to them and then they turned into the bad guys by oppressing the people who were there first?

Not really.

In the late 1800s, nationalism was all the rage in Europe. A guy named Theodor Herzl decided to write about nationalism for the Jews, called Zionism. Zionism was a very secular movement. Uganda & Argentina were considered, but the Zionists settled on Ottoman Palestine. Note that at this time, Palestine didn't really refer to as the home of the Palestinian people and there's significant dispute as to when the Palestinians started thinking of themselves as a separate people.

A bunch of Jews from Europe started immigrating to Ottoman Palestine. The British took the territory after WWI and immigration continued. This caused a lot of tensions between Jews & Arabs. After WWII & when the United Nations General Assembly voted to suggest partitioning the land between Jews & Arabs, civil war broke out. It was kind of a three way war between Jews, Arabs, & the British. The Jews were more or less OK & the Arabs weren't, though the plan was never implemented. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when people say the UN created Israel. Anyway, the British pulled out of British Palestine & the Jews declared a State called Israel. The nearby Arab states (Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq) declared war but Israel managed to defeat them. The armistice line is the border of modern Israel and was more extensive than the original UN suggestion. Egypt occupied Gaza & Jordan occupied the West Bank, so no new Arab state was created in British Palestine.

There was a lot of fighting between 1948 & 1967. The 1967 war, also known as the six-day war, saw Israel capture Gaza, the West Bank, & Sinai. Israel would later give Sinai back to Egypt as part of a peace deal. Jordan gave up it's claims to the West Bank in the late 1980s. The PLO, which was considered a terrorist organization in the West, became the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. Israel & the PLO negotiated in the 1990s and created the Palestinian Authority. We're bumping up against the 20 year rule at this point, so that's about it. I left out a lot of stuff, but that's basically the gist.

I can't discuss too much as far as current day situations. We are limited to a 20-year boundary in discussing history. However, I can point you to two previous questions on the subject, found in the FAQ Section.

The first question has to do with how Israel was created. It is a pretty long post, but I (biased of course) think it's worth a read. If you remember half of that post, you'll know more than most people I've met (I live in the United States) on how Israel ended up becoming a state.

The second question has to do with the question of refugee creation. I basically outline the most recent beliefs as far as how the Palestinian refugee problem of 1948 began, and whether it was the fault of Israel, Arab nations, or both. Another long read, as a heads-up.

If you'd like to know more about something else, you'll have to be more specific I'm afraid. It seems you want information on the situation of today, which we cannot discuss here.
