What were the world's intial reactions to the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

This isn't the initial reaction to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but the reaction of the possibility just a few years later of using The Bomb again.

I was part of the initial work to digitize this school newspaper, which is the only reason I noticed this tiny blurb from 60+ years ago. For some context, this is the school newspaper of a small Christian college in Texas during the Korean War (Dec. 8th, 1950 to be precise) - a snapshot into the thoughts of a few "normal" young Americans at the time. I found the answers to be surprising in a number of ways, but I'll let you judge for yourself.

What was the reason it was dropped on the city and not on a fleet of ships or something else more military based and less civilian based?
