The short answer is "yes." War is a confusing place and orders are often misunderstood, never recieved, or ignored.
Probably the most famous example would be Guderian's "drive to the sea." During the Invasion of France in 1941. Guderian and Rommel kept their armored formations advancing much deeper into French territory than their superiors were comfortable with, both of them deliberately disobeyed orders to stop. However their plan was wildly succesful, leading to the rapid and complete defeat of France in a matter of weeks.
