In the Spanish Colonies, why were Mestizos higher up the social ladder than the Mulattos, if Natives were of lower status than Africans?

Also, should Mestizo and Mulatto be capitalized, or did I error?

Natives weren't of lower status than Africans (at least by the late 16th/17th centuries). Natives were subjects of the King and were afforded substantial legal/political rights and autonomies that African descendants didn't have as much access to (at least in theory... in practice, local monopolies and distributions of power often served to exploit Indians, but even then they could theoretically appeal to colonial authorities for protection).
