As a member of the militia he would have worn red in his earlier years (I think). But did he lose the red in favor of white when he became commander in chief during the revolution? Or was there a specific point at an earlier time?

James Kochan has written an article on the Blue & Buff regimental George Washington chose. The uniform comes from the Virginia Fairfax Independent Company of Volunteers and made its debut in May-June of 1775 while he was attending the Continental Congress.
