Was St. King Louis IX really deserving of his sainthood, or was his canonization based on other ulterior motives?

Deserving, as in with regards to the standards of sainthood within the Catholic Church.

The standards of canonization during this period were ad hoc at best, and almost entirely dependent upon the personal intervention of the sitting Pope. In this sense, Louis's very close relationship with the Pope, as well as his efforts on behalf of the Church, made him meet the only real standard that existed at this time: one's relationship with the Papacy.
