Was Italian used in [Present Day] Italy, while Latin was still the Official Language of the Roman Empire?

I'm just wondering if some precursor to Modern Italian was used in what is Italy today, during the reign of the Roman Empire, while Latin was still the dominant language?

Actually, Latin is the "Some precursor of modern Italian" that you're looking for! What's spoken there now is the result of 2000 years of linguistic evolution from the tongue of the Roman Empire. Check out this recent post for a good discussion of it.
