Why is there a statue of Robert E. Lee at the US. Capitol building?

I get that he is considered an excellent general and soldier so I do understand his reverence. My confusion is why he is given a statue by those he fought against? Do any other countries have a statue or memorial of a general that fought on the opposing side?

He's part of the state statuary collection. Each state is represented by two statues in the Capitol. The state governments are in charge of choosing which two people they would like and getting the statues made. Virginias two are George Washington and Robert E. Lee. Jefferson Davis and Alexander Hamilton Stephens are also in the Capitol, located in Statuary Hall, aka the old House of Representatives. I was an intern on Capitol Hill this semester, and went through 5+ total hours of tour training.
