I feel like its a fair question, I'm excited for some answers
Edit: This thread has been super fun to read, thanks guys/gals
Age of Empires.
No, seriously. That's what piqued my interest in military history.
I am not a historian though, just someone who's quite interested in history.
My dad was an award winning World History teacher. He absolutely loved everything about history. When I was a kid he would tell me stories all the time of things like the Russians using the cold to their advantage for war, or various American war battles. He would be very theatrical in his tones and paint the most amazing picture with his words. I was only three or four when he started. It made me love history and I am so thankful to him. He passed away when I was 15 but his imprint is still strong in my life.
I was the only person of color at my school growing up. Finding out what happened to everyone else that looked like me was important in creating a sense of identity, and it's taken off from there.
Unfortunately I only uncovered an interest in history very recently. It's something that perhaps I'll have the opportunity to study someday, but work and life tends to get in the way of these things.
As for what got me into it; the Civilization games. The Civopedia has a bunch of information about all sorts of cool stuff, but not only that, the games and how they evolve is always fantastic. Funnily enough the historical interest that stemmed from Civ brought me to this subreddit, which has provided many hours of procrastination interesting insight into many historical areas.
It was the only thing i was ever any good at in school. I dropped out at 16, and eventually made my way back to education 24 years later, i am about to graduate with a B. A. in History and Philosophy at 40 years old.
I love history and have written a 15000 word dissertation on local Irish History during the Tudor Conquest of Ireland. If it was up to me i would go all to way to P.H.D. and teach it for the rest of my life, but the recession is still biting and i have mouths to feed. I'm hoping that once i get my family back on their feet, financially wise, that ill be able to find time to still write and maybe one day get published in a History Journal. To see my name in print would be a life's dream complete.
I've been fascinated with WWII era stuff since I first learned about the holocaust, bit when I discovered Sabaton three years ago (did you see the TIL post about them today? Check out /r/Sabaton for more info about them) and met my fiance because of both them and a mutual love of history, well...it's kind of a huge part of our lives now, moreso than ever. Our bookshelf is littered with military documentaries, and books about Napoleon through the Vietnam Conflict.
My parents bought me a World Encyclopedia when I was in 2nd grade. Never looked back from there.
Zeus: Master of Olympus got me interested in Greek mythology, which then led to becoming interested in ancient history (Greeks, Egyptians, etc). This kinda just flourished into wanting to learn more and more about history.
I guess that living in a place with such a rich history too (Northern Ireland), persuaded me to learn more about our own past as well.
I'm not a historian by any means, I just really love history and politics, which I guess come hand in hand. I'm in GCSE History though, and I hope to do higher courses in it.
A class called "The Myth of the American Family" and an amazing professor in college. Realizing history was so much more than names and dates of battles.
Mine started when I was but a small child and interested in things other than direct knowledge of history. I went through that phase as a kid (kindergarten to be exact) where you are super into dinosaurs (didn't hurt that Jurassic Park came out right after I got interested in that subject), and it got me to wondering, if dinosaurs were around millions and millions of years ago, what has happened in the mean time? And it slowly took off from there, like why would some Ancient Greek guy be named after children's putty, or why is this famous sailor for the British named the same name as my moms family(sir Francis drake), where do video games from and what is this "japan" place all about? So I continued to do research on various topics and it expanded from there. Btw it didn't hurt that I got a MASSIVE atlas as a kid too...so there were all these new places that I had never seen before and wondered how they got to be where they were. So yeah...history = lots of fun.
The Horrible Histories book series. When I was younger I loved them because they showed me history could be something more than just a random collection of years and names you have to remember.
Funnily enough the time period I disliked more back then (Modern History) has become the one I'm more fascinated by now that I'm taking a degee in history.
