How important was Gandhi's experience with civil rights campaigns in South Africa on his later experiences in India?

Sounds like it was incredibly important. Where else do you get to practice your nationalist movements?

According to «Gandhi: A Very Short Introduction» by Bhikhu Parekh (1997, Cambridge) he regarded his support for the Apartheid (but not for the status of Asians in it) as a mistake and would then emphasize how you, a modern prince, had to be mindful about the progressive and the Christian public in the West along with your domestic intellectuals and boors.

He also tried to import the expat's Hindustani language as an alternative standard for the still current Urdu/Hindi divide.
