With the creation of large Colonial Empires by the European powers throughout the 16th-20th century, why did most monarchs choose to keep the title "King" instead of Emperor?
Some were both http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King-Emperor King of England and emperor of India for example. Cause the structure of smaller local kingdoms in India remained intact.
