It's unreasonable to assume that the largest military operation in history wouldnt have some errors that that are revealed years later but no guns at PdH is a pretty big deal.
All it really indicates is that the allies knew there were 6 gun emplacements and that 4 of them were being upgraded. It was a good idea for the Germans to upgrade them because this is what they looked like after the bombardment. If the guns had been there they would have been taken out by the bombardment. The Germans thought that the position was impregnable from the sea and so only lightly defended it. 5 guns were found about a mile from the emplacements. There is some debate about what these guns were. The soldiers who destroyed the guns claim they are the guns from Point du Hoc. The amateur historian that discovered the Maisy Battery complex claims they were mobile artillery pieces. If they were the missing Point du Hoc guns then there were guns at Point du Hoc that were pulled back for safety or for the construction. If they were mobile artillery then they were the guns that were probably going to be on Point du Hoc as soon as the 70 soldiers nearby got the orders to put them there.
Either way the assault on Point du Hoc was a sound military decision. If the Rangers hadn't taken those cliffs there likely would have been guns on them by the end of the day.
