Summary of Wars?

So, let me understand that you want a basic military history of the world covering almost a thousand years. I'm sorry but you ask way too much for us because even if I'd write a three sentence summary of the Napoleonic Wars, I would more than likely have to write about two pages of information, further it is rather limiting to ask us to be short about complex events.

Finally, why not include unsuccessful revolts? If we're not including things such as this, then we'd have to define what is a war. The War of Jenkins Ear is a minor war compared to the larger picture of the 18th century, but that's a still a war, so does it warrant the same amount of discussion as the Seven Years War, a war that we're still feeling the effects of?

I apologize but this is much too much for us to do.

Please don't take offense to this, as I really do want to help you, but trying to sum up every war over a 900 year period in a sentence and trying to memorize it all to sound smarter is not going to make you sound smart. You're not going to impress your friends or be able to impart any meaningful knowledge on internet discussions by knowing a few Snapple Facts about the 30 Years War.

Not to mention, what do you even define as a war? There were literally thousands of conflicts in this period. Even if this was the right question to ask it would be literally impossible to answer because of the sheer scale and the absolute arbitrary nature of your classification (why 1850 as a time to include the rest of the world?)

I really do appreciate you trying to learn more and wanting to know more, that's great! But you're going about it the wrong way. You don't get further understanding and "not sound like an idiot" as you say by knowing a bunch of bullet point facts and dates. Find something that gives you a lot of passion and then dive into it and specialize in it. You aren't going to know enough from a bunch of 3 sentence quips to find out if you truly love a subject and there's no point in trying to study literally 900 years of military history in any meaningful depth.

If you want a nice book I'd recommend The Rise of Modern Warfare: 1618-1815 by H.W. Koch. It should give you a firm overview of the transition warfare went through in the Modern Era and the transformation it took notably in the Napoleonic Wars. It's also very easy reading, meant for people new to the subject, and I freaking love the pictures in that thing too -- keeps it fresh. From this you can determine if this is a field of military history you have a passion for or not and worse case scenario you learn a good amount about the subject of 17th-19th century warfare beyond a bunch of snapple facts and know where not to look in the future.

Example: Hundred Years' War: England and France fight over territorial and rights to the throne. Import battle at Agincourt. Significance: [I'll let you do this part]

Obviously, I hope your content is better than mine, because I love military history, but sound like an idiot talking about it.

That's what I thought, jus needed to hear it

sdm_112358

Can you do one without summaries, just a list?

Thanks. Although I'm not doing it to impress anyone, and I meant 3 sentences per war. I will read the book, I am struggling to find good stuff like that.

Sorry, but this isn't the best subreddit for this. We don't allow such 'throughout history' type questions. I would suggest either /r/AskHistory or /r/AskReddit with a [Serious] tag.
