The Western Han dynasty (206 BC – 9 AD) was the first of two dynasties. It fell in 9 AD to a rebellion led by the former regent Wang Mang who created the Xin Dynasty (9–23 AD). Eventually the Han dynasty was restored under Emperor Guangwu in 25 AD. This started the Eastern Han dynasty (25–220 AD). The names come from the location of the capital. During the Western Han period the capital was in Xian, to the west. Although during the Eastern Han period the capital moved around a bit it was predominantly in Luoyang to the east. However, to make things simpler they are also called the Earlier and Later Han Periods.
