In Europe there are cemeteries dedicated to fallen American soldiers. What did countries do with the bodies of fallen German soldiers who were left behind? Cemeteries of their own, unmarked graves?
In Belgium many fallen German soldiers were buried in a cemetery created especially for them, in Lommel. It's the largest cemetery for German casualties of WW2 outside Germany.
The soldiers buried there were first buried elsewhere in Belgium during the war and moved in 1946-1947 when the cemetery was created. It is the final resting place for 38560 German WW2 soldiers. There are also hundreds of German soldiers from WW1 buried there, many of them were moved from a WW1 cemetery that used to be near this site.
Initially around 13000 soldiers were unidentified, in 2008 however about 7000 of those were given a name after an in-depth investigation using DNA and other modern techniques.
Over the years more German soldiers have been buried there, who died in WW1 or WW2 but whose bodies were not recovered. The latest were 3 Luftwaffe soldiers in 2008.
It's just the same as any other cemetery dedicated to large numbers of soldiers who fell during those terrible wars.
In Trondheim, Norway we have an Allied war cemetery and a German one. Both are well maintained.
