I have the basics such as Richelieu using the intendants to raise taxes and Mazarin doing the same. Plus I have information on Colbert investing in industry and the trading companies and the surplus of livres the government had during Colbert's time. Anything I'm missing?
You could look into Jean-Baptiste Colbert and his work as the Minister of Finance under Louis 14th after the death of Mazarin.
Well, I'm a French student in History, so maybe I can be helpful !
I know a certain number of sources, but all in French, sadly. Lucien Bely's La France Moderne 1498-1789 is a very good book, a summary of the said period, and you can certainly find some informations about the economic context of each century, and the main policy. Maybe a translation has been made in English, I hope you can found it.
Again, in French, and more in depth, Histoire économique et sociale de la France. Tome I, de 1450 à 1660 and Histoire économique et sociale de la France. Tome II, 1660-1789, by Fernand Braudel and Ernest Labrousse, two figures of the french historiography. These books are again very good and complete focusing on the socioeconomic aspect of the french modern period. But then again, I have no idea if you can manage to find it translated in English.
Good luck for your exam !
Get a copy of the exam board textbook (there's almost always one of them.) A Levels are more a test of style and writing ability than any deep knowledge of the content; ability to employ evidence incisively at the right place as part of a coherent argument will stand you in much better stead than an extremely broad knowledge of the period.
AHA! Finally a topic I might be able to add to! So, I'm a textile historian, so these are going to be pretty specific things... but, here are the first few more general or interesting bits from my resource database.
Lemire, Beverly and Riello, Giorgio. (2008) East & west : textiles and fashion in early modern Europe. Journal of Social History, Vol.41 (No.4). pp. 887-916. ISSN 0022-4529
Benedict, Philip. Cities and Social Change in Early Modern France. London: Routledge, 1992
Beik, William. A Social and Cultural History of Early Modern France. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2009.
Clare Crowston (2008). Women, Gender, and Guilds in Early Modern Europe: An Overview of Recent Research. International Review of Social History, 53, pp 19-44.
And as a general index of older works : Taylor, Barry. Society and Economy in Early Modern Europe, 1450-1789: A Bibliography of Post-War Research. Manchester: Manchester University Press, 1989.
Unfortunately most of my work is England, the Low Countries, and Northern Italy, so I'm not much help beyond these sources. But if you ever have any questions about textile history in specific, feel free to ask!
Good luck for your exams!
I have read quite a few books on the period, but I can't really remember any names, and they were all in French anyway, but you could have a look at Voltaire's Century of Louis XIV (I'm not sure it's the correct translation for the title, but it should be easy to find).
I personally loved it, it's very detailed, and it covers Louis's entire life chronologically, but it is very long (my paperback edition was around 700 pages I Think). You mind not need to read all of it though.
Being a history student myself, I would advise you to diversify your reading as much as possible (though you appear to know that)
Sorry if it's not easy to read, I typed this on my phone.
