I am really interested in learning more about the Sumerians, Babylonians, Canaanites and Egyptians. If any of you know any good books on these subjects/people, that would be great! Thank you!
It depends a bit on what you want ('easy reading' vs. 'academic'), so I'll just suggest one each for Mesopotamia and Egypt, respectively.
Mesopotamia: For a nice overview with a lot of illustrations, you can have a look at Michael Roaf: Cultural Atlas of Mesopotamia and the Ancient Near East. 1990.
A good and more detailed overview of Mesopotamian history (incl. Sumerians, Babylonians, etc) is Marc van de Mieroop: A History of the Ancient Near East ca. 3000 - 323 BC. Blackwell, Second Edition 2006. (This is the textbook I use with my undergrads, so it's more academic, but very well written and worth a read)
Egypt (I'm not an expert on Egypt, maybe somebody else would like to add something!): B. J. Kemp, Ancient Egypt: Anatomy of a Civilization. (Routledge, Second Edition 2006) - This is a social history and drawing heavily on archaeology.
And I really like Bill Manley: The Penguin Historical Atlas of Ancient Egypt. (Penguin 1997) - The books in this series (unfortunately there isn't one for Mesopotamia) always give a very nice concise overview and are a good starting point.
Feel free to ask again if you want more recommendations for specific subject areas! :)
