That is a bloody good micro history question.
Unfortunately I don't know anything about it (wish I did) and cannot find much in the way or articles or books about the subject in a historical context.

I think you are mostly going to be limited to partial accounts found in other sources.
The only two books I know for sure mention it are Spain's Men of the Sea and The Waterman's Song both of which are only in passing, mostly to say that prostitutes and escaped slaves sometimes stowed away on ships respectively.
You're going to have to comb biographies and books about seaman's life to answer this question. I wish you luck in finding out more, its a great question.
