Just started learning about him, it seems like he did a lot of bad things. But were they all lawful, and look bad in retrospect? Or did he actually do illegal things
Quoting myself from a previous thread dealing with the pros and cons of Jackson's presidency
He broke the law-While the political battle to recharter BOTUS II was ongoing, Jackson ordered his SOT McLane to remove federal deposits from the bank, however the SOT was required by law to only do so if the funds were unsafe, and this information had to relayed to congress. McLane did an investigation and found the bank quite safe. McLane was unwilling to remove the funds and Jackson removed him, appointing Duane as SOT. To Jackson's surprise Duane also refused to remove the funds, fearing that it would cause other banks to recklessly extend their credit( See number #3). Jackson finally appointed Attorney General Taney as SOT. Because the senate was in recess Taney held the powers of both cabinet positions and legally excused the actions that were to follow. Taney paid the government's bills with the money in BOTUS II while depositing new cash into state banks, violating the spirit if not the letter of the law. When Congress returned they were furious and Andrew Jackson became the only US president in history to be censured (later stricken from the records by a Democrat controlled congress). Another similar incident wouldn't happen in American history until the Nixon adminsitration
