Why is Nixon considered a "bad" president besides Watergate?

hi! there's always room for more input, but meanwhile, you may be interested in response in these related posts

Was Nixon really as bad a guy as everyone seems to agree he was?

Taking away Watergate, how is/was Nixon regarded as a president?

I wasn't going to answer as I don't have any academic level sources for this, I'm going off of memory mostly, but since this has been sitting for a couple hours and nobody has taken a crack at it I will.

This is difficult because we're talking about perception during one of the most divisive times of American history, but I think if you are asking what other actions contributed to the 'Tricky Dick" nickname, you have to take a look at his Vietnam war policy.

Nixon ran in 1968 on a platform promising to end the war. Towards the end of 1969, it did seem that things were coming to a close. Then the My Lai massacre story broke. This was followed by changes to the draft in late 1969 that instituted a lottery system, which eliminated deferments that were allowed previously. In mid-1970 there was the 'incursion' into Cambodia, which was perceived not as an effort to bring the Vietnam war to a close, but an escalation.

One day after announcing the invasion of Cambodia, protests broke out on the campus of Kent State University. Three days later, four students would be shot dead by National Guard soldiers. President Nixon's response to this, at least to the younger generation, was perceived by many as callous indifference.

All of these things happened in the first half of Nixon's first term. I don't think any of them helped his reputation as an honest politician. It's important to note, however, that he was on to something with his "silent majority" stuff, as he was re-elected by a landslide. That's why I say this perception of him as a 'bad' president is hard to gauge. Everyone knows about Watergate and people say 'bad' but aside from the negatives, Nixon's legacy is peppered with a lot of good things too. He was an interesting man.

That's all I have, hopefully someone else can provide more answers for you :)
