What is the "best" English version of the New Testament for someone interested in its historicity and the technical details of its translation?

The other commenter mentioned ESV, which is a good translation. Many scholars, however, are partial to the NRSV...which--although also a revision of RSV (as ESV is)--relies on up-to-date scholarship a bit more than ESV does (and has some less transparently theological/confessional translations). Also, many people recommend the New Oxford Annotated Bible--which contains the text of NRSV but has commentary and annotations by scholars.

The NASB is probably the best literal translation, preserving the Greek syntax well.

Although this isn't exactly my favorite translation itself, the NET Bible has fantastic notes alongside the text, which delve into the scholarly issues quite a bit.

The ESV has become the text of choice for most reformed denominations in America. The Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod made it their official study bible.

Unvarnished New Testament is a great read.
