I cannot remember the name mentioned but as the title says is there any truth to VDH's claim?
John C. H, Lee was the Major General placed in command of the US Army Service of Supply in England in 1942. He was in charge of Logistics in the European Theatre of Operations until the end of the war. He was one of the most controversial figures in the wartime US Army. To his close friends, he was known as "Courthouse" but to exasperated low ranking Quarter Master NCOs, he was forever remembered as "Jesus Christ Himself". While the Judge Advocate Generals could never convict Lee of corruption in any of the several dozen charges filed against him, there is no doubt he loved the millionaire life-style and he submitted expense claims that would make a Madison Avenue advertising vice president blush.
In his memoirs, Lee always referred to himself as "We". He expected dumb shows of deference wherever he went. He liked to hob nob with British Aristocrats. When he moved his headquarters to Paris in August of 1944, he took over no less than 296 hotels in Paris to house his bloated staff. Lee acted like the US Army was there to serve him, instead of him serving the US Army. The ETO is full of stories of his ineptitude. Bradley. Hodges, Patton and Eisenhower were all exasperated with his incompetence and often asked for him to be replaced. Yet. somehow, John Court House Lee was able to get appointed the Deputy Theatre Commander and was bullet proof to all attempts to get him replaced. Supply and logistics bored him to tears. In his memoirs, he devotes just three pages to how he ran the supply chain of the US Army, but devoted nine pages to the doctors he knew and twelve pages to the dogs he owned.
