If you scroll down to the bottom of this comment, you will find an excerpt from Anna Komnene's Alexiad (written in 11th Century Byzantium) where she denounces the "science" of astrology. According to Anna, her father, the Emperor Alexios I Komnenos "waged war" against astrology because he felt that objects and signs in the sky arose from a natural cause, rather than being mystical omens sent to fulfill some prophecy.
