How did Native American Tribes respond to rape?

by ScalsThePenguin

Was the reaction to the news similar to present day? Shock, anger, denial?

Were there different views on rape per tribe?

Did tribes have their own ways of punishment or was it mostly universal?

How was the victim supported?

Thank you :)

That's like asking how Europeans responded to rape... Could you be a little more specific and list the tribe or culture you're thinking of and during what era?

I'm sure for example their reactions vary as widely as their uptake of agriculture of absence of, use of written language, level of wealth, who was raped, and if it was in a time of tension and numerous other factors have bearing.

I could generalize regarding various tribal cultures at various times but if you can help me a little here then I can give you a better answer.

follow-up question: was rape as common in peaceful, egalitarian Native societies as it was in the much more misogynistic and brutal europe?
