I can't remember for the life of me where I heard this but it was attributed to George Washington and I have never been able to find it sourced. Hoping someone with more insight can fill me in, thanks!
On a related note, I've been meaning to ask: was it at all credible that Washington could have become a monarch? I know some Americans began calling him 'your majesty', but was there any actual movement to have him be crowned king? And if so, how did they expect to handle the line of succession?
