Historians of Reddit, what do you think our relationship is to the actions of previous generations?

I live in Australia and like most previous colonial/imperial outposts of the British Empire and other European Empires, we have a particularly awful legacy of treatment of the indigenous population. National pride about the 'Aussie Battler' idea is a large part of our cultural narrative on how we view ourselves and our past. However, there is very little discussion about our the darker shades of our past.

How much responsibility do we have towards the good and bad parts of our nation's past? If we are going to embrace the positive aspects, say the ANZAC's, shouldn't we also be mindful of the negative, like the Stolen Generation or White Australia Policy?

I have to say I think your interpretation of the state of Australian history is lacking...

In the public sphere, yes, we revere the ANZACs, and there's a lack of some understanding of indigenous Australians, but I do not feel this is representative of Australian history as a whole...

Even in the public sphere, Robert Manne has long criticised the ANZAC worship, and Kevin Rudd's apology was designed to highlight our past abuses of indigenous Australians... We can also go back to Whitlam for the same thing, and Kev Carmody and Paul Kelly for their songs about its...

In the education system, I've taught at year 9 and 10 in Victoria, and I can tell you, the negative aspects are well covered, and we have quite a comprehensive view...

In the academic sphere, our most famous historians - Manning Clark, Geoffrey Blainey and Stuart Macintyre - have been the target of conservative federal government attacks (look up the History Wars) because of their comprehensive, and almost critical theory approach to Australian history... They can hardly be accused of white washing anything, and their scholarship is beyond doubt...

In short, I think Australian history, particularly in the academic sphere, but also in the public sphere, engages very well with the topics you mention... If you have any more questions or examples, please ask...
