This isn't an historical note, but the author Trevanian (Rodney William Whitaker), author of "The Eiger Sanction", chose to name a Basque character in his novel "Shibumi" Le Cagot. He also published under the name Beñat Le Cagot. Maybe this can be a lead to some info which, as you've noted, is sparse.
