Adrinne Mayor in The First Fossil Hunters: Dinosaurs, Mammoths, and Myth in Greek and Roman Times talks about the fossils on display in the ancient world (they were generally wowed in the same sort of way) and has a has a theory to the extent that a lot of myth derives from the discovery of fossils and trying to interpret them, most notably the idea that a lot of the reports of giants were misred mammoth bones.
