What was the religion like in ancient Carthage?

by Danu126

I'd like to know what the 'religion' (what we'd call it) was like in carthage. I'd like to know what it was like 'pre' roman contact, or before the Punic wars.

Thanks

Phoenician cities all shared 3 vague deities under different names, the 'chief' deity, the 'mother' deity, and the 'cycle' deity. The chief deity in Carthage was Baal-Hammon. Think Zeus, but with no evidence of the promiscuity or pissiness. He was the god of the sky, and therefore rain, and therefore fertility. The Mother diety was Tanit. Think Ishtar, but with no evidence of the promiscuity or pissiness. She was the goddess of war, birth, fertility, and to some degree the sky (possibly especially the night). The cycle god was Melqart. Think Osiris. He was the god of death and the sun. For some reason, the Greeks conflated him with Heracles. I can't help in regards to actual religious practices, sorry.

Well there was multiple deities, but the two primary deities were Baal-Hammon and Tanit, however they also inheritied the god Melqart from tyre. Whether or not child sacrifice occurred is a hotly subject so you can read into that yourself.
