What is the "the Pious" and "the Bald" called?

by SouthBaptistRaisin

Okay, so I used to know the actual name for the "nicknames" of historical figures, but for some reason I can't remember it.

I've always been a big fan of the historical figures that carry the "the Pious" or "the Lionhearted" etc., but recently I cannot remember what the term is. I know it's not nickname, but I need your help. What is the word I'm looking for?

Also, what is your favorite "the" from history?

I've always been partial to Charles the Fat or Pepin the Short. Why? Cause they make me smile.

The descriptive word itself is an epithet.

On a side note, you may enjoy reading through this Wikipedia article as it is quite a comprehensive (but definitely not exhaustive) list of nicknames that have been given to notable nobility throughout history.
