Is there any historical connection between France and roosters? There's also a french apparel company, "Le Coq Sportif" or "The Sporty Rooster".

The Rooster is a very old symbol of France, predating many of the more familiar symbols we associate with France today (e.g. the Tricolore, Marianne etc). It's based on a Latin pun - Gallus is Latin both for rooster and for France. The Rooster was a popular symbol in the Middle Ages because it symbolised pride and the victory of light over darkness (since the Rooster's cry comes at dawn).
