Does anyone have more information regarding Helene Hanfstaengl? She was marred to Ernst Hanfstaengl, but Hitler had a thing for her...
I am wondering when she was born, when did she die, etc. Did she live through World War II? If so, what were her thoughts about it?
There appears to be remarkably little information about her fate.
There's a bit about her in Hitlerland. According to her, she talked Hitler out of committing suicide after the Beerhall Putsch and inspired him to carry on with his political movement, and also got him secret medical treatment for his injuries. She even took notes on what he wanted to tell his followers, when he was arrested after the Putsch. She was born in New York City in 1893, named Helen Niemeyer, daughter of German immigrants who was raised to be bilingual in English and German. She never had German citizenship. Helen and Ernst met and married in New York City, but a year later moved to Munich. She left Ernst and they divorced in 1936. She moved back to the US in 1938 and stayed in the US throughout the war. She had been a German sympathizer in World War I as well, when she was living in New York. She lived through World War 2 and into the late 20th century. At first she was as attracted to Hitler's ideology as her husband was, and didn't find his anti-semitism to be objectionable, but rather she rationalized it. She commented upon what a mesmerizing speaker Hitler was. She knew Hitler was attracted to her but she wasn't interested in him. She and her husband both suspected Hitler was impotent or "a neuter" (her phrase). When she was interviewed in the 1970s she mentioned she became disaffected by the Nazis after the Night of the Long Knives, though she never expressed any objection to the Holocaust, and seemed to like to play up her importance as a friend to this historical figure. Hitlerland also has a number of family photos of hers.
