After the elevator was invented, how did the perception of top floors of buildings change? Was it a swift or gradual cultural shift?

Before the invention of lifts, flats/offices on the top floors of buildings were the least desirable as obviously you had to walk up several flights of stairs to get to them. After the invention of the lift, however, they became more desirable, as the higher up you were, the less pollution and noise you would experience from the streets below (horse-drawn carts were noisy things).
