Are there maybe any recorded documents describing what they thought of these humanoid like creatures that bounce around?
Well when Cook turned up they'd not had fresh rations in months. So Lieutenant John Gore did them the service of swiftly shooting one of the big rat creatures. Captain Cook's journal said "Today we dined of the animal shot yesterday and all thought it excellent food"
So they thought "yum!" edible bouncing rat. I am sure it was a nice break from salt pork or beef and hard tack..
Here's a direct transcript of Cook's observations on the Kangaroo's appearance and of eating them, 14 July 1770. http://southseas.nla.gov.au/journals/cook/17700714.html
