Germany's Operation Barbarossa and it's Army Group North Center and South are well know, but in light of Viktor Suvorov's Books, is there any actual information about the Soviet Army's placement and arrangement within the borders of the USSR right before June 22 1941?
The book "Order of Battle : The Red Army in WWII" by David Porter details the placement of Soviet Forces at the start of the Great Patriotic War on June 22 1941. There were seventeen Military Districts, plus the STAVKA strategic reserve. The four that bore the brunt of the fighting in June and July 1941 were the Baltic, Western, Kiev and Odessa Military Districts. This book shows the Soviet order of battle, down to the division level and uses the example of the Soviet Second Rifle Division, to show how an infantry division was organized at its lower echelons. It also looks at the organization of the Soviet Mechanized Corps and shows how they were all below their T & OE strength on June 22 1941. For example. they were supposed to have 29,484 tanks, but only 23,197 were on hand. Also, the tanks that were around were older, obsolete models. The Soviets wanted 11,760 T-34 medium tanks to be in service, but only 967 were available.
