I apologize if this is not the appropriate place to ask this question. I am currently doing research for a film that features several scenes in an esteemed New York social club (a la The Mauntauk, The New York Yacht Club, The Metropolitan Club, The Harvard Club of New York, etc.). For reference, I require photos of social clubs in the target "era" so that the filmmakers can get a sense of the atmosphere and vibe for reproduction when shooting. Pictures such as this are very difficult to come by, seeing as published photography of these clubs is usually prohibited unless expressly permitted by the club. I assume that of all people on reddit, you historians would be the most likely to be able to satisfy such a specific request. If this is not the appropriate subreddit, I would very much appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.
I did some initial research, and it appears that of the photos that are available online, most of them were taken around the turn of the 20th century, although I did find some photos taken in the 1930s. That said, I think your best bet is to contact the folks at the New-York Historical Society for their help. I have worked with them before and they will do their best to help you out or point you in the right direction; here is their contact information. I also recommend reaching out to the fantastic Museum of the City of New York. They have an online collections portal that has a few photos. However, it probably would be worth your while to contact them, as they have quite an extensive collection and should be able to help you out too; here is their contact information. Yet another wonderful resource is the New York Public Library, which has a digital gallery that contains some interesting pictures and information that will inform you about the history of these social clubs (it includes a neat collection of menus).
Good luck!
