Practically in the first years of the regime Mussolini was intollerant of any other authority except his own and tried to wipe out the mafia in Sicily. Cesare Mori prefect of Palermo organized many raids and imprisoned hundreds of low-ranking mafiosi. The attack, however, did not change the deep structure of the Sicilian society.
