The Almoravids and Almohads were serious powers in the 11th and 12th centuries. They ruled Muslim Spain from Morocco. But even after their declines, Morocco was a serious player in the Western Mediterranean for a few hundred years. They managed to escape annexation by Spain, Portugal, and the Ottomans.

Before the division of Morocco as a separate political entity from Algeria and Tunisia, Morocco was the extreme corner of the Numidians. As for powers actually centered in Morocco, the short lived, but incredibly powerful Almoravid Caliphate which united Morocco and dominated Southern Spain. Ultimately they delayed the Reconquista for a century or two.

The Almohads and particularly the Almoravids are hardly the same as Morocco. The Almoravids originated in northern Senegal, even if they later set their capital in Marrakech.
