What happened to heroin addicts that were drafted into WWII?

by gregmax

Or indeed to any war. Could they avoid the draft because of their addiction? Is there any evidence of heroin use by soldiers during the war?

I've tried to find an answer to this question but google only returns information about veterans who became addicts AFTER the war. Thanks.

You should try expanding your search to focus on drugs policies with regard to conscription and/or narrowing it to focus on a specific country. Finland, the country I'm most familiar with, is at the extreme end of the spectrum. A search for Finland heroin turns this up.

“It was an interesting time with respect to the substances”, recalls Erik E. Anttinen, Professor Emeritus of social psychiatry.

Anttinen fought during the Winter War, the Continuation War, and the War of Lapland - first in the artillery and - after going to flight school - in the Finnish Air Force.

“Substances qualifying as hard drugs were handed out surprisingly freely, in my opinion. If someone had a cough, he might get dozens of heroin tablets, because it was an efficient cough suppressant”, Anttinen recalls.
