Before the invention of the automobile were there still instances of what we knoe classify as "car culture"? E.g. would people make extravagant modifications to saddles/wagons, or were there street racing scenes?

Every country fairgrounds included a racing oval; local customs on wagering varied. Even in big cities, a portion of a pleasure drive though a local park would attract wealthy young men who could afford fast horses and lightweight sulkies or roadsters for exhibitions of speed. On Chicago's original Lake Shore Drive (today's Cannon Drive) around 1900, I think it was Thursday afternoons that were set aside for "fast driving."
